Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis

It is often said that the northern parts of Norway is the best places in the world to see the northern light. If we are to be honest, that is only partially true, as the lights can be just as visible from destinations outside of Norway. But few countries can rival the vast selection of activities, tours, cruises, restaurants and hotels which all play an important part in this arctic experience.

It’s like a celestial ballet of light dancing across the night sky, with a colour palette (green, pink, violet) reminiscent of a really cool fashion show from the 1980s. To the locals in Northern Norway, the northern lights are a part of life. In this area the aurora borealis has been, and still is, a fertile source for art, mythology and legends.

Jotunheimen National Park

Jotunheimen is a largely undisturbed mountain area in Eastern Norway, covering an area of roughly 3,500 square kilometres, including Norway's highest mountains Galdhøpiggen (2,469 m) and Glittertind (2,464 m), as well as waterfalls, rivers, lakes, glaciers and valleys.

Jotunheimen, which is Norway’s most popular national park and a part of The National Park Region, is ideal for cross-country and alpine skiers, cyclists and climbers who enjoy the experience of basically undisturbed nature and fresh air.

The Midnight Sun

It’s tempting to wonder about all the sights and experiences that have been made under the midnight sun through the ages – by people living off the sea at the Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos, or the Sami reindeer herders of the far north.

The earth is rotating at a tilted axis relative to the sun, and during the summer months the North Pole is angled towards our star. That’s why, for several weeks, the sun never sets above the Arctic Circle.

Going there, you can live these moments yourself: Doing a whale safari, or exploring the wilderness inland, takes on a new dimension at night in the summer months, when you literally get to see the nature and wildlife in a different light.

Approximate dates when you can see the midnight sun at Bodø from 4th June until 8th July.
